THE DEANE AWARD FOR DECORATIVE ARTS & DESIGN 2007/08
Calling all furniture & product designers!
Organised by TheNewDowse, the Deane Award for Decorative Arts & Design, is a project-based award established to support the creation and display of innovative new work within an exhibition context. The inaugural recipient of the Deane Award was jeweller Alan Preston. This year we would like to invite practitioners in the fields of furniture and/or product design to submit a proposal. Applications can be submitted by individuals, collectives or companies.
The recipient will receive $10,000 towards the realisation of their project.
Applications are due by 30 January 2008.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
TheNewDowse is about stimulating creativity.
This relates to our roles in supporting fresh creative practice as well as providing our audiences with accessible and inspiring experiences that stimulate their creativity. Decorative arts and design is a key focus of our collections and exhibition programme.
Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:-
The degree to which the receipt of the Deane Award will contribute to the significant development, (technically and/or conceptually) of the maker’s practice
The suitability of work(s) for TheNewDowse collection
The ability of the resulting exhibition to engage audiences
Proven ability to execute the proposed work, within the agreed time frame (to be negotiated).
Submissions will be assessed by a panel comprising of: Claire Regnault, Concept Development Manager and Tim Walker, Director of TheNewDowse and an external design expert.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
1. Application is by way of a proposal. Proposals must include:
Project objectives
A conceptual outline for the development of New work: (supporting the creation of new work is a key part of The Deane Award but this does not exclude the inclusion of earlier work in the resulting exhibition).
The Exhibition
- Working drawings and images of past work relevant to your proposal
- An indicative budget breakdown, based on a total of $10,000 plus GST
- Proposed additional sub-contractors or manufacturers (if applicable)
- Potential in-kind supporters
- Critical path (based on the exhibition opening in either October 2008 or February 2009)
A resume outlining professional and exhibition histories. Presentation folders or bindings should not be used.
As part of the Deane Award, a work(s) from the project, with a market value of no less than $3,000, will be retained for TheNewDowse Collection (to be selected by TheNewDowse).
1. Proposals must be accompanied by a self-addressed envelope with a suffient postage for the return of support material
2. The recipient will be presented with a total award package with a total award package to the value of $10,000 cash.
3. Any taxes incurred by claiming the prize are the responsibility of the recipient.
4. The recipient agrees to transfer all rights and property of the acquired work, including copyright to the Hutt City Council.
5. The Selectors' decision will be made on the basis of the information required in clause 1 only.
6. The Selectors' decision is final and no correspondance wil be entered into.
General Conditions

- Proposals constitute full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these terms and conditions.
- Entry is open to all citizens and permanent residents of New Zealand except elected members or employees of Hutt City Council, or their immediate family members or persons living in the same household.
- Hutt City Council reserves the right to amend any or all of the terms and conditions due to unforeseen circumstances.
- Personal information provided for the purposes of the competition is collected and held by the Hutt City Council to enable it to communicate with entrants and select a winner for the competition.
- Entrants have the right under the Privacy Act 1993 to obtain access to and request correction of any personal information held by Hutt City Council about them.
- The recipient agrees to their name and image being used for promotional purposes.

Proposals must be recieved by 30 January 2008. Late expressions will not be accepted.
