Homemade Mathematics
17 Feb – 1 July
The bold silver façade of TheNewDowse is a happy hybrid of artistic expression and eco-friendly design. This stunning artwork entitled Rainscreen, has beencreated by Wellington-based artist, Simon Morris, Athfield Architects and Fraser Engineering. It contains movable panels to both capture and control the sunstrike, and thousands of diamond-shaped perforations to create an ever-changing shadow play inside and outside the building. The cutting room floor provided a bounty of diamond shaped discs, which will be later used for a brooch-making workshop. Upon completion of the facade, Morris, whose work focuses on the design and use of pattern, has created several major pieces which meditate on the process of creating Rainscreen, and formed the basis for the exhibition Homemade Mathematics.
