9 September Live Online Performances

The 090909 UpStage Festival is supported by Creative New Zealand. UpStage is supported on an ongoing basis by CityLink and Auckland University of Technology.

On the 9 September TheNewDowse and Hutt City Libraries are hosting the 090909 UpStage Festival - a unique festival of live online performances (cyberformances) by 13 artists traversing 9 different time zones. Kicking off with the first performance at 2pm you can watch the performances in the comfort of your own home - just log on to www.upstage.org.nz. Or pop into TheNewDowse or Hutt City Libraries and tune in to one of the Connect computers or watch on a big screen.

This year’s performances include a near drowning that unites the cities of New York and Venice in Salvation; a fairytale princess corrupted by a lifetime of unchecked power and narcissism in Snow White and the Seven Chihuahuas; the butterfly effect infiltrates a virtual kitchen in The Dish; and a group of children retell a traditional Maori tale in Maui and the Sun. For a full schedule visit www.upstage.org.nz.

UpStage is a web-based platform that enables people anywhere in the world to participate in live online performances, created in real time by geographically dispersed performers. The players use images, audio, video and text to create the performances, operating “avatars” – graphical characters that move and speak aloud. Audiences can interact through a text chat tool. The performances are accessible to anyone with an internet connection and browser.
