Craft2.0 returns with a celebration of the handmade and some soothing winter retail therapy. Keep up to date with this season's stockists on the Craft2.0 blog but get ready for a fabulous day of shopping. There'll be jewellery, clothing, bags and accessories, stationery, linen and more.
Event organiser, Sue Tyler, is making a stand for what it truly means to buy handmade. Those who frequent the Craft 2.0 fairs know and love them for their carefully curated assortment of handmade goodness. They are a Mecca for style junkies, craft enthusiasts and fans of all things handmade and Sue handpicks her sellers accordingly, “It’s the commitment to New Zealand-created, independent design which sets Craft 2.0 apart,” she says.
The whole ‘handmade’ issue can be a contentious one but Sue goes by what she refers to as the “75/25 rule” when she selects crafters to sell at her Craft 2.0 fairs.
“I know not everything is going to be 100% made by the person who is selling it, but I am looking for something that is at least 75% their creation. For example, I make a range of pendants which I design on my computer and have laser cut in New Zealand. I then add component parts which I have sourced from overseas. So the idea begins with me – it’s 75% my creation and it’s the pendant, not the chain, which is the focus. What isn’t OK for Craft 2.0 is when someone buys something wholesale and then adds a component part to it, like a ring base or a brooch back. In this situation they are an amazing shopper with really good taste, but it’s really only 25% their creation," says Sue.
“People coming to Craft 2.0 expect to buy fabulous things which are handmade in New Zealand by independent designers and that’s what we deliver.”
Media is invited to view the fair early from 9.30am please rsvp to sue tyler sue@craft2.org
