Stephanie Bird, 'pinch. salt shaker', 2010.
The Friends of The Dowse announce the winner of the 2010 New Zealand Student Craft/Design Award.
The overall winner of the 2010 Student Craft/Design Awards is Stephanie Bird with her entry pinch. salt shaker. Steph takes home the winner’s cheque of $3,000. The judges loved the simplicity and style of this entry, noting that Steph certainly exceeded her brief in “ensuring the form exudes style and communicates function explicitly”. Steph is in her first year of a Graduate Diploma at Massey’s School of Industrial Design in Wellington.
The NZ Student Craft/Design Awards was judged by architect/artist Gina Jones, TheNewDowse Director Cam McCracken and Mark Pennington from Formway Furniture. The judges commented that it was again great to see a large number of entries in this years’ awards, 54, from tertiary institutions all over the country. The high calibre of the entries made judging rather difficult, so it was unanimously decided that there would be a “Highly Commended” entry and also ten finalists would be selected to receive certificates and have their panels displayed in the Lounge at TheNewDowse. The winning works will be on display following Thursday 21st until Monday 25th October 2010.
The other results for this year’s awards are:
RUNNER UP – MERIT AWARD: David Hakaraia with his “Waka Whakaka” entry. The intricacies of David’s work, which were highlighted with the LED lighting, really drew the judges’ attention from the start! What also embellished David’s entry was the inspiration behind his design and that it captures who he is with the three motifs entwined into the entry (Maori, Pacific and European).
HIGHLY COMMENDED: “Shadowlight” – This entry was picked as a Highly Commended Entry as judging became difficult in the final three, and ironically it is a second entry from Stephanie Bird
