Late Lounging and Great Grooving at TheNewDowse
Gallery stays up late for Roy G & the BIVinators on Thursday 5 November
As part of its monthly Late Lounge series, TheNewDowse art museum will host the soulful sounds of Wellington folk-ska-reggae group Roy G & The BIVinators next Thursday 5th November. This is a great chance to kick back after work, get down to some great local music and check out TheNewDowse’s exhibitions. Quick Bite Guided Gallery Tours will be on offer at 5.30pm and 6.30pm, prior to the gig at 7pm, and tapas and drinks will be available from Café Reka. There will also be a cash bar and all gallery spaces and exhibitions will be open until 9pm. Entry is by koha.
Roy G and the BIVinators is lead by Maz Hermon, a 26 year old Whangarei born musician who lives in Paekakariki. During the past two years, the band has graced a range of festivals and events including the Parihaka International Peace Festival in Taranaki and the Newtown Festival in Wellington, as well as playing in the Wellington Botanic Soundshell last summer.
Maz Hermon specialises in guitar, vocals, and trombone with much of his training spent as lead trombonist in the Whangarei Youth Music Concert band. Study at the New Zealand School of Music followed with a major in jazz performance on the trombone. Maz is also involved in the Newtown arts symposium extravaganza “Woken Bird” which showcases rising artists and musicians. Maz says he is focused on taking his original music to the people through both recording and live shows with Roy G & the BIVinators. The band’s debut EP ‘For the People’ (2008) and the full length album ‘The Rainbow Throw’ (2009) were recorded at ROY G Records, Maz’s own studio. http://www.roygandthebivinators.com
