Eve Armstrong: Collective Pursuits—Horticultural Hall Activity Archive
This event has already taken place
Eve Armstrong welcomes you to drop in to The Dowse from 11–22 November to share your Horticultural Hall activity or event memories and anecdotes. Your personal records will create an informal archive from which Eve will form further research and artworks, as part of next summer’s exhibition Solo 2018.
Wellington-based artist Eve Armstrong has vivid childhood memories of the Lower Hutt Horticultural Hall; the colourful range of events that took place there over the years and how it functioned as a community space.
The public records documenting this civic venue do not capture the social history, despite the important role it played in the city from 1959 to 2014. For part one of the project Collective Pursuits, Eve will create a ‘Horticultural Hall Activity Archive’, gathering together memories of the Horticultural Hall: from the Saturday night dances to floral art displays, big weddings to roller skating and karate demonstrations; all of the momentous and ordinary things that happened in the Horti Hall.
