Finding the Rising Stars of Contemporary Art
This week our Senior Curator, Melanie Oliver, is off to Sydney to sit on the judging panel of the John Fries Award.
The John Fries Award is an annual $10,000 art prize recognising the talents of early career visual artists. Founded in 2010 by the Fries family in memory of John Fries, the former director of copyright agency Viscopy, the Award has established itself as a platform for some of the most engaging and experimental contemporary artists from across Australia and New Zealand.
Finalists are selected by a panel that this year includes our Senior Curator Melanie Oliver, alongside Clothilde Bullen, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Kath Fries and Fiona Lowry.
The finalist exhibition opens this Friday at UNSW Galleries in Sydney. Curated by Consuelo Cavaniglia, it includes the 12 finalists Kuba Dorabialski, Fayen d’Evie, Ben Leslie, Barayuwa Munungurr, Claudia Nicholson, Kathy Ramsey, Bridget Reweti, Tina Havelock Stevens, Ella Sutherland, Angela Tiatia, Amanda Williams, and Anwar Young. The winner will be announced this Friday night!
Stay tuned for more about the winner!
